Hello, all. The moving/yard/rummage sale season is in full swing, and today I picked up this beautiful bowl for $10.

I believe it to be old Kutani, at least first quarter of 20th century, maybe even late 19th?

White underglaze is a beautiful creamy white. Hope photos of foot rim and intricacy of design can help to date it.

Thank you! Kaaren

Hi Kaaren, I'm not of much help with dating Japanese porcelain, but the condition of the rim and base looks more like 19th century to me.
The mark is indeed Kutani, but the top character on the left side is written badly. Most likely it is  an attached workshop named Eigatsu-Do or Nagatsuki-Do. The reading depends on whether it is the name of the owners or just a shop name; the characters are the same in either case but the reading would be different. The second would be the reading of a family name.

Thanks, Peter! I have three other very nice Kutani pieces that this site judged to be first quarter of 20th century, and the wear on this is significantly different and more advanced, hence my guess.

The cricket is also something I haven't seen in later pieces, I was happy to see it!

Now I have bowls with bats and crickets. K.
