Hi guys,

The bottom design of this dish, I've seen often but not sure on the dating of this design. I suspect Republic maybe earlier? But also could be late Qing?

I have the opportunity to buy this but I have some doubts..

Stan

I think it is Chinese in a Japanese style, I have never seen such peonies like these in Japanese decoration, and a straight foot would mean 20th century or later.

Thanks Stan! Would you say Republic? Or much later?

Stan

It looks like it has age, first quarter of the 20th century.

Careful. The straight rim is typical for Jiaqing/Daoguang. The decoration underneath the rim is not as fine, usually. The phoenix and peonies don't look right either. While the body might be old, we must always consider the possibility that a blank was used to add a much later decoration. To my taste this looks too perfect.
I'm sure that a hands-on inspection using a magnifier or microscope would also create doubts about the decoration's age when viewing the the glaze.
The outlines of the pomegranate, the feathers of the phoenix and parts of the tail look as drawing tools were used to draw them, rather than by hand.
I would say when in doubt, do not buy...
