Appreciate the clarification, as I was confused. Then perhaps this is Korean, part of that "Goryeo Revival". If they now use exclusively Korean writing, perhaps this is a bit older than first thought, although still 20th century. K.

I'm yet to see Korean porcelain from any period before the 20th century that has a mark...a peculiarity compared to other countries.

Ah, but this piece isn't porcelain, it's earthenware - heavy as a bowling bowl and giving off the telltale dull thud when tapped. This is what swings me back to the Rakuzan kiln in Matsue, whose specialty is earthenware, and is known for being heavily influenced by Korean pottery. KB
