Title: Another Chinese jar
Post by: hn2503 on Oct 22, 2022, 00:01:41
Hi Peter et al,

I came across a Chinese vase with Qilin chasing the sun/moon on one side, and another beast with a bird on the other side. The beast on the other side is probably also Qilin but I am not certain. Can the bird be a Phoenix? (but the bird's tail is not long enough).

Do you know when this vase was made? Late Qian or Republic? and for what purpose?

I attach images of the vase.

Thanks
Long

Thanks

No, that does not look like a phoenix. Never saw such a decoration and cannot tell how old it is, but first or second quarter of 20th century is a probability. The rim shape means that it is either a fish basin or jardiniere, depending on its size, probably. We do not see many items of this sort.  :)

Many thanks Peterp for the comments.

The diameter of the upper rim is around 20-23 cm. It is not a big item.
