Title: Satsuma ?
Post by: konniela on Mar 11, 2022, 01:03:13
I have seen a very unusual (large, 50 cm) plate with this mark. It is a japanese mark (hope so), can it be satsuma ?

Hi Konniela, This looks like Kioto pottery, a Satsuma type, all I can make out for sure is Great Japan, 50cm is a good size for a charger, the color looks right, there should be a small crackle throughout the almond color or Ivory color glaze, do you have a picture of the front?

Yes, I have a picture from the front. It looks so non-japanese to me, that I dare not to post a photo before

Hi Konniela, I believe this would have been made for the Islamic market mid Meiji.

Yes, this makes sense. It seems, that unusual decoration is often a sign, that the piece was made for islamic market. Good to know. Always a pleasure.
