Title: Republican Guanyin Statue?
Post by: Hmm on Feb 01, 2022, 12:50:14
Thoughts on whether this is Republican or not?  I seem to recall reading somewhere that around the late Qing, Republican, the bottoms had a canvas print on them, but this one is pretty smooth with a hole.

I would say second half of 20th century...

So I think when I bought this several years back, it was represented as early Republic.  The seller is a bit knowledgeable about things, but sometimes apparently gets things wrong, although not terribly wrong, e.g. the object is still old, but was misidentified.  Are the colors off or is this the case of the bottom just being incorrect?  Should all pieces back then have that canvas bottom?

Thanks.

We cannot know it all, there is just too much. In my opinion "vintage" would be a better description. As you already mentioned, the bottom is not early republic as the impression of the cloth is not there.
