Title: unknown mark on Japanese? bowl
Post by: swanny on Jul 16, 2020, 09:06:31
Does anyone recognize this mark? It looks like a fish. Is it Japanese? And is the bowl ancient or modern?
Any help would be appreciated

This site deals mainly with antique porcelain. On antique Chinese porcelain underglaze blue fish marks do exist, but they look quite different. In other words, that is not an antique Chinese plate. Either it is newer or Japanese, or both. Overall the painting style and colors used looks like later 20th century, if it was Chinese. But the colors give somehow the appearance of certain Japanese plates imitating Chinese motifs, made during the 20th century.
