I bought this bowl but my online search hasn't been helpful. It looks like the mark says Tongzhi Nian Zhi but the mark doesn't really match any marks I can find pictures of except for a plate that had a red wax mark also. I am worried that this means it is a fake. Is this a legitimate antique or a decorative bowl made in the famille rose style?
Apocryphal Tongzhi mark on an early republic bowl, in my view.
So this bowl was made 1911-1920? Does apocryphal mean the same here as it normally would, as dubious? I searched it expecting more posts on fakes or backdating, but google just pulled up a bunch of auctions? I'm sorry I don't know anything about Chinese antiques I just bought this because the women's faces were beautiful and it was obviously hand painted.
apocryphal is spurious, a later copy, fake mark - or simply not of the period...the mark shows an earlier period than the bowl is from.
Thank you for following up on my question, I appreciate that. That mark was very confusing to me.
