Title: Turquoise Foo Dogs
Post by: bokaba on Jun 12, 2017, 06:01:52
Hi Peter and Stan,

I saw these at a local shop that is going out of business. I was wondering if these are antiques or new. They don't look detailed enough to me for 19th Century. I think mid-20th Century.

Thank you

Hi Bokaba, I agree mid 20th century or later, I just looked at a pair just like these at an antique store, I see all the time.

Thanks Stan. I think these are the type of wares one would have found in Hong Kong tourist shops in the 1950s and later. For reference, here are two that were on the Antiques Roadshow and dated late 19th Century.

Notice the eyes, how they were cast separate, I have a pair of large foo lion, I believe that is the correct term with the Chinese, we call them dogs but the Chinese call them lions, the ones I have I believe are late Qing but the provenance is early republic, thanks for the picture.
