Post by: kardinalisimo on Apr 23, 2014, 12:11:14
It is about 5 1/2" tall. No lid. The crackles are on the inside.
Any help with dating it?
Thanks

What do you mean it is not painted like that? This pattern did exist in the same or similar decoration during Kangxi.  But I find some recent, some 19th/29th century ones. So I need to find out the period it was made.

Hi kardinalisimo, on early Qing the ginger jars on the tops were not glazed but on the late Qing and early republic they are always glazed, yours apears to be late Qing.

I was thinking about the rim. Were the earlier pieces fired with the lid on and that is why they had unglazed rims? If so, when was that practice abandoned?
I am wondering also why there are so many crackles on the inside. And how did the holes in the glaze on the exterior occur?
Thanks

Items are never fired with the lid on. It was just common to use unglazed necks, possibly due to the lid or other cover used. May have had something in between lid and jar.
As Stand mentioned, this is late Qing (Guangxu).
