Title: late Qing or Republic period
Post by: Simonne on Mar 19, 2014, 12:28:09
Hello,

I have just acquired this vase, could you tell me your opinion, please? I'm not sure if it's Republic or late Qing period.
Thank you,
Simonne

Hello, your vase looks like late Qing, but the leaves and the birds do not look right to me for that period, could the decoration have been added at a latter time? lets see what Peter thinks.

Hi, it looks early republic to me.

Neither am I sure. Personally, I would tend to lean towards late Qing, simply because I have seen items with a similar style of painting, and because glaze and everything is right for late Qing.
But it could be on the brink, so I would leave it at Late Qing or Early Republic. There are lots of items of that period that could be either.
BTW, I'm aware that the leaves are painted in a way that is less frequently seen. We cannot be sure, however, that this is not a matter of the artist's personal preference. Both leaf shape and birds seem to be of a more southern variety. Perhaps made in the first two decades of the 20th century, I would think.
