Title: Blue-purple Bowl
Post by: kardinalisimo on Jun 04, 2015, 11:18:33
I'm posting in other Asian ceramics because I have no idea if this is Chinese nor if Asian at all. I don't see any wear so whatever it is, it is probably recent. By the way, I've never seen so tiny spur marks on any pottery before.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Im thinking Japanese, I just went in the other day in a Japanese antique store and they had several such items with glazes that look similar, my guess is vintage.

Stan, did you note the stilt traces? I don't know...but they look different from the classic Japanese ones. Could it be Korean?

Again, may have nothing to do with Asian ceramics. I even suspect US pottery but wanted to double check.
I don't recall seen such small stilt marks on American pieces either. Most of the ones I've seen are pretty much the same size, like the one on the Asian pieces. The bowl is a bit lightweighted for its size. Maybe they used some very small support.

If I hadn't seen the bowls at the japanese antique store, Korean would have been my first pick but the dealer said the bowls he had was used for tea, I have never heard of tea bowls, tea cups but not bowls but I guess it Japan tea is a big deal, at the time I did not check the bottoms to see how they were set in the kiln or if there were any marks, but he did say they were vintage.

Japanese tea bowls used in Chado (Cha-no-yu) can be very large, but they usually are deep, with a small bottom area. I have my doubts as to its prupose; a wide, shallow bowl is causing the content to cool down sooner.

So maybe a rice bowl?

From the shape I would think it is suitable for any food, but not necessarily a rice bowl. Those bowls usually resemble more the classic tea bowl in shape. -:)
