Title: Shou character on vase?
Post by: Sanura on May 08, 2015, 20:13:20
Hello,

I have a vase with characters on it.
But the character is not the typical shou character, it misses a horizontal line on top?
Is this also a way to write the shou character or is this something else?

Thank you!

Hi Sanura, I had a bottle vase that had the same decoration around the waist, this is a typical detail on a Guangxu period bottle vase, however the one shown here is like the latter copies, I can't tell you much about the Shou Character although mine had the cross on top, but if you look at the budded flower just below it, you will not find that bud on any of the period Guangxu bottle vases at the high auction houses, I see them all the time on E-bay, Im afraid this is a later copy in my opinion, it would not hurt though to get a second opinion.

There is a myriad of variations of the character. Many are decorative only.
