Title: kylin plate
Post by: Simonne on Mar 02, 2015, 01:17:33
Hello,
I have this damaged/restaured plate, could be Ming, what do you think? Thank you in advance for your opinion.

This is not Ming. Actually, I have doubts that it is Chinese at all. Could it be Arita?
A picture showing a side view of the plate might help.
These are not qilins (kylins) but lions (aka foo dogs).

Hi Peter and Simonne, I think Arita was always marked with blue rings on the bottom, I wonder if this could be Seto porcelain.

I do not know enough about Japanese porcelain, but the underside does not look much like Chinese porcelain, in my view. The color seems also a bit too light for Qing, but this type of rim decoration was developed only in the Qing dynasty, as far as I know..
