I recently bought this for a very low price as a Chinese item. It is quite crudely made and was fired in a wood kiln. The glaze seems to be smoked and also has ash. Is this SEAsia or Chinese? It came in a box of mixed items, Chinese, Lao and Thai. It's very tactile, a nice piece.

Chinese. Probably made in one of the coastal kilns in the south.

Thank you Peter. Does it have any age?

I would say Ming at least, but they may have been made over an extended time. Those coastal and southern kilns often produced items for storage or real use. I have seen several jars like this, sometimes the glaze is all black. The base/foot rim and clay consistency is quite characteristic for these.
