Hi Peter and Stan,

Do these two bowls look authentic to you? The iron-red one is 4 1/4" in diameter and the blue and white one is 4 3/8" in diameter. Both are 2 1/4" high. The decorations are like nothing I have seen before and I haven't been able to find any Jiaqing marks that match the one on these two bowls. If anything, the marks look a bit too similar to me which raises some red flags.  Any assistance is much appreciated. Thank you!

Cheers,

Charles

Hi Charles,  I am not as experienced with Jiaqing period, but from what I have seen, the red bowl with bats, the bats do not look and good as the ones that I have seen, here they look a little sloppy drawn and the decoration not as the same quality on both bowl, the mark looks good but it looks a little to dark from ones that I have seen, so a spurious mark and not period but that is just my opinion, lets see what peter says.

Stan

I forgot to mention that on the blue bowl it looks like the scratches were artificially added to make it appear older, all the scratches run in the same direction, if it was period the scratches would not be so uniform.

My impression of the bat was also that it was a bit overly crude, and large.
As regards the blue bowl, I cannot see if these are glaze frits or not, but along the whole top rim there are some brown-yellow scratches or glaze frits. Much too many and too regular for my taste. A high quality item would have a few at the most, and in irregular size and intervals.

Charles, please be careful. This is a class of items that is very intriguing, either high quality fakes or imperial, but it is difficult to tell for sure from pictures.
There are many bowls with Jiaqing marks on the market now, and all are relatively high quality. Just be careful if you see too many offered at the same place or at the same time. It is easy to get duped with such items. I would first have one checked by an appraiser or auction house personnel, before deciding on further purchases.

Charles

Thanks for the advice Peter and Stan. I haven't bought either of these two bowls. First time I have ever seen Jiaqing porcelain and wanted to get some second opinions on them before moving any further. I have a suspicious and skeptical nature so very few items ever catch my attention and even fewer actually get a bid from me haha. Cheers!
