Not sure if this is Chinese. Although it seems to have age, the neck and shoulder decoration does not look Chinese, neither do the leaves in the background. That should be banana leaves, but they are not painted this way, usually.

I was told it was a transitional piece.
But you are right about the decoration.
Japanese?
