teapot lid

Hello:

I am a new member, and hope I am in the right place for this.  I've been told this is Chinese. 

I found this little lid scuba diving off the west coast of Canada.  The area has history dating back to the mid 1800s only.

I would appreciate any information on this item.

Better upload item pictures. The second character seems to point to a Japanese name, however the first characters seems to be illegible, as if someone tried to copy the character without knowing how to write it properly. It makes no sense...
