This small vase or cup (4 1/2" tall) has been in my family for years. Can anyone identify the design and translate the calligraphy?

shelley Kong

They say "made in Japan" with a company and artist's name.

Anne

Thank you Shelley Kong.

Does anyone, considering the design and markings,  know an approximate age? I think it's at least pre WWII.

Stan

Hi Anne, I think your Japanese vase is trying to imitate gouda porcelain from Holland, I have seen better imitation that look more like the Gouda ware than yours. Your vase looks newer to me, mid 20th century at the most.

Stan, could this be Japanese export? They made items in European styles for the European market.
I don't know the style, but the mark looks genuine. But, you know more about Japanese wares than me.

Stan

I think your right Peter, that makes perfect sense, the vase is more than likely to be Japanese export to the Netherlands, Gouda pottery is very collectable and has very similar shapes, decorations as this vase, I see it all the time at antique shows, the last one I went to had a Japanese vase that could have been mistaken for Gouda ware, it was that good of a copy, but clearly signed with Japanese characters.

Thanks Stan.
Basically, the mark content is as follows:
Made in Japan (Dainippon)
by  "??" Company ?(proper company name unknown)
Craftsman:
Takeuchi ....    (family name, but cannot read last characters as image too small)

Stan

The mark could suggest late 19th century.

Anne

Thank you all....!
I knew it was older than mid 20th century because it has been in the family for many years. I had no idea about the Gouda connection. Interesting.
