is this piece a cricket cage box?  15 cm height, is it antique or vintage, chinese or japanese, what do you think?

The form makes it look like a garden stool.

This is probably recently made, judging by the decoration.

Yes Shelley, but garden stools have a certain height and no lid, usually. This item is apparently imitating the same shape as the stools, the Chinese drum.
